The Makena Children’s Foundation has an important partnership with Elite Schools located in Nyahururu, Kenya. Nyahururu is a popular place for competitive runners to train because of its location at a high elevation.

Most of the Makena students begin their sponsored education at Elite and many complete their education through high school there. Some students transfer for secondary education because they receive prestigious invitations to other high-ranking Kenyan schools.

Nyahururu Elite Schools include a large nursery school (on a separate campus), a primary school and a high school. The students’ results on national exams are impressive. The school consistently ranks in the top four nationally for schools of its size. Along with the emphasis on high academic standards, the school offers physical, social and emotional support as well as spiritual development.

Makena Children’s Foundation Founder and President Emeritus Sherri Mills says she is impressed with the commitment of the management and faculty of the school. Head Mistress Keziah Waithaka has many years of educational experience and believes in addressing all of a child’s needs, not just his/her academic requirements.

“That’s very good for our kids,” Mills says, “because all of our children are orphans, have lost one parent or have had some catastrophic family situation. I like knowing that Keziah and her husband Daniel Waithaka—who own the school—live on campus (between the boys’ and girls’ dorms) and are available to the children.”
